Let’s talk wardrobe staples…
I’m having a whale of a time shopping the autumn trends this year! I’m completely hooked on adding to my wardrobe, which is new for me because I usually find shopping a bit of a chore.
I don’t know if it’s just me being festive and embracing the cold weather for once, or if this year’s offerings are just extra cute! Whatever the answer, someone needs to hide my credit card asap. Maybe I’ll freeze it in to a block of ice like they do in the movies.
There’s quite a few pieces sitting in my wardrobe currently that I consider staples; the items I think are incredibly versatile, last year after year and keep my wardrobe looking pretty up to date.
I’m quite an effortless dresser most of the time, and autumn and lazy dressing totally go hand in hand…
The cord skirt…
You’ve probably spied me rocking a cord skirt a few times recently, I think cord is such a faultless texture for autumn. Last year I picked up a ton of styles from Forever21 when we were in the States, but I recently got this beautiful emerald number from Topshop and I absolutely adore it. I’m loving a bit of green at the moment, and this darker shade is such a lovely change from the typical rusts and burgundys I usually go for.
The checkerboard shoes…
Oh hello, I’m 14 again. No, not really… I’m just embracing my wardrobe from half my lifetime (!!!) ago. That’s worrying.
Say what you will about my fashion choices, but you can’t deny these aren’t cute. I love slipping them on with a pair of Topshop Jamie jeans and a colourful knit for the ultimate effortless outfit. I just wish I’d kept the first pair I had all those years ago…
The staple beret…
What can I say, I love a beret! I have an entire drawer full of ’em and I’m always looking for new colours and combinations to add to my collection.
I wear my beige one a lot, I find it’s a nice change from black and doesn’t need lint-rolled every ten seconds.
Everyone always asks me how to wear a beret; I usually put it on and use the little… nipple (??) bit to pull it back and to the side a little. I wear mine about a third to halfway down my forehead, although I do see a lot of girls wearing them further back so a section of their hair is showing. I think any way works with a beret, honestly. Just put it on, act confident (it takes a while to feel like you suit one!) and own it! Maybe hold off on wearing a stripe tee during that adjustment period though, the jokes can wait until you’re a bit more comfortable with your new accessory.
The chunky knit…
The chunky knit! Fun fact, I was hanging out with some friends before I went to meet Jordan for our (very casual) first date, and a couple of my guy friends kept yelling “lose the chunky knit!” because I was wearing this big, long cardigan as part of my very cute ensemble. Well, I persisted and kept it on, and now we’re married. Some say it’s the chunky knit what did it.
Anyway, I really think you can’t go wrong with a couple of beautiful pieces of knitwear in your wardrobe. I love how versatile a cute cream jumper is; perfect for wearing with your favourite comfy jeans and trainers at the weekend, or throwing on with a midi skirt and ankle boots for work during the week. Divine.
The statement bag…
Oh I do love a statement bag! I’m definitely more of a bag person than a shoe person, I’m not sure why that is, but I’ve always, always loved handbags. I think they’re the cherry on top, the finishing touch to an outfit.
I’ve been giving my JW Anderson Logo bag a lot of love already this year, it’s something I bought last year but I only used a few times and I actually almost sold it. It’s weird what a difference a few months can make!
Of course, a statement bag doesn’t have to be designer – Mango is my favourite place to shop for good quality handbags! Just as long as it makes your outfit pop, the price tag is irrelevant.
This has got me in the mood to shop even more now, although I do have to do my ASOS returns before I even consider another purchase! I’m on a ‘one in, one out’ policy until further notice.
I hope you lovely lot have been inspired by my autumn edit, I’ve popped a few more favourites below if you fancy a browse…
