An ode to Friday nights…
In the Spiers household, there’s really nothing quite like Friday evenings. We wait all week for them, slowly counting down the hours while talking it up. It’s a wonder they ever live up to the hype, but they always do!
For the last few years, we’ve always kept Friday nights for ourselves – our friends know we’ll hang out on any other day of the week, but we keep that one evening for us. We plan a dinner (sometimes it’s a takeaway, sometimes we’ll cook!) and a cocktail to make, pick a film and then relax after a long ass week.
I’m not sure where it stemmed from, although I have a feeling it’s because we usually eat well and forgo alcohol during the week so we spend Sunday night through Thursday dreaming of the weekend! Normal behaviour, obviously.
Usually Jordan will be at the shop until around 6pm, but since he’s been home everyday we’ve been sitting in the office having a drink at our desks for the last hour of the work week and it has been BLISS. I’ve had Jordan on espresso martini duty most days because they’re so quick to make and you get a quick hit of caffeine to perk you up too. Yikes.

It’s just become such a thing for us to plan our Friday evenings, even while we’ve been in lockdown! I think having these moments to look forward to have been keeping us going if anything, it really fills me with joy to know that whatever the week throws at us, I’ll be sippin’ a chilled concoction with my feet up come Friday night!
Our other rituals for the evening centre around relaxation – my hair goes up in a topknot, I light my favourite candle and we usually listen to a playlist or a record while we wait for dinner and chat about the week.
As I said, this is something we’ve always done and the familiarity has been so comforting during these strange times.
Of course, I couldn’t tease you with my tipple (lol) and not share the recipe…
To make two espresso martinis…
In to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add two double shots of espresso, 50ml vanilla vodka (regular is fine if you have it), 50ml Kahlua, shake well and strain in to a martini glass. Top with chocolate powder if you wish!
I can only handle one or two before I start to get the shakes (even when they’re decaf, which says a lot about me), but Jordan can sip them for hours. He does start to do random high kicks around the flat after a while though.

TGIF!
I’ve been working on some playlists to share with you soon, so we’ve had our records out for inspiration and from that I’ve rediscovered so many old favourite albums! We pulled out the Cheap Trick at Budokan album to listen to tonight, and our drink of choice is going to be grapefruit margaritas which we’ll pair with a toothsome meal of Papa Johns pizza and Mini Eggs. Heavenly.
We’ve also just got Disney+ and I’m obsessed! I find there’s more I want to watch than on Netflix – last night we watched Free Solo which was great, and tonight I think we’ll pop on Honey I Shrunk The Kids. What can I say? I’m a woman of culture.
I think you have to appreciate the little things in life, and for us this is definitely one of those things that brings us sheer joy! If you don’t already make a moment out of your weekend evenings, I highly recommend you do…
Have a wonderful evening everyone! xo.
