Bedroom Mood Board.

We’re spending every waking moment working on our bedroom at the moment – we never properly finished the floors when we moved all of our furniture in, and I have big plans for this room so there’s been a lot of planning happening.

I have spent a lot of time wondering what to do with this room – when we moved in it was pretty gross (a few people in my ‘moving in’ YouTube vlog told me to leave!), but I knew it had potential. We had the walls replastered, painted them white and then painted the (dark blue!) floorboards white to match. I left the skirting boards, the area around the door and the window area wood, which I loved but the skirting boards are super old and looked a bit worn out. I decided to paint the skirting boards this week, but I left the door and window area wood – I wasn’t sure if it was going to be too much white, and I was pretty nervous because it’s quite an irreversible process – but thankfully I love it! It looks really clean and the wood that’s left really adds warmth. You can see it taking shape in the above snap.

I’ve spent a lot of time pinning to my Bedroom board on Pinterest – I think I have some solid ideas that are going to transform the room. I struggle a little getting the balance of traditional and contemporary just right – as the room has incredible cornicing, real floorboards, big windows and high ceilings, I don’t want to many ‘too modern’ touches. I also have a hard time getting the ‘white balance’ right – I have kind of gone off white furniture recently, but I never know if mixing wood finishes looks good until I see it all come together.
I’m slowly replacing most of my IKEA furniture with more original pieces, but it’s an expensive job and sometimes I just head back to IKEA purely for the money I save.

Below are some mood boards I put together, with the help of Pinterest, to help me come up with ideas on how to style the room.Β One thing I’ll absolutely be doing is building a shelf in the alcove we have (where my rail is currently) – I found this pin after I had toyed with the idea for a while and I was instantly sold. I just love how cute and cosy it looks.
I also really want lots of gold, white and grey in here – I purchased a gold mirror yesterday (Β£8 charity shop find) and it’s set the whole room off. I’m struggling to find nice bedside tables at the moment, I don’t think I want white ones, so I might but the IKEA Hemnes because I like the style, and then sand it down, stain it and put new knobs on so you can’t tell it’s IKEA at all. Sneaky.

I also want a gold diamond wire light fitting in here – I think I will have to paint one I find on eBayΒ but I think it’s a nice retro/modern twist. As the room is so white, the gold details will really help to add warmth – sometimes all-white rooms can look really cold if you don’t have the right touches. I already have one all-white room (my office), but luckily I like pops of colour so we’re usually all good.

Finally, plants are a must. I’m definitely going to do some sort of floor-plant pot thing in one of the corners. I also want another hanging plant feather, but I think I’ll do it with gold plant pots and maybe black string, something striking but not too crazy!

What do you think of my plans so far? All the images, sources etc. can be found here.

  • It took me almost three years to finish my bedroom and now I love it, I have a similar mirror to the gold one in the first picture, I really like the last pic with the shelves, the deer head looks really nice, we have many sets of antlers hanging on the walls at home πŸ™‚

  • The wire light fittings look amazing! We just had 5 installed where I work and they look incredible, especially with filament bulbs in.

I love the mix of white, teak and green plants. We’ve just bought some gorgeous teak retro furniture for our lounge, but the bedroom is more of an art deco feel. It’s a hard slog getting it right but it’s a process and you’ll get there in the end! Can’t wait to see how it looks in the end xx

  • Kat

The shelf idea will look great in your bedroom! Loving the colour schemes and that mirror! What a find. Sanding down IKEA furniture and making it more your own is also a fab idea! Can’t wait to see the finished product x

I think it’s more difficult than you’d think when it comes to home decor/interior design as you can like so many different styles (white yet warm/Mediterranean/Scandi/Modern Country chic with big, gorgeous oak floors) but finding the best ‘mix’ or working out which one you’ll like the most/finding the right balance is so difficult. I also agree about IKEA furniture, it’s so so affordable however almost everyone goes there and everyones homes end up looking the same. I think the idea you have about the bedside tables sounds great and very sneaky indeed. Me likey.

To be completely honest Kate, I think what you’ve already done with the room looks ten times better than the Pinterest pins. I love the minimalism of the chair, the mirror, and the dresser in the first photo!

Yes. Yes. Yes. Love it all. Your room at this point in time looks like something from MY decorating mood board (well if I am honest, some of your photos ARE on my mood board). Good luck with any future DIY. Looking forward to the posts.
