Foundation-Free Makeup.

IMG_5681

As I mentioned in a recent post, my skin has been looking a lot better lately and because of the warm weather I’ve been skipping out on the heavy bases… in fact, all bases – except for a touch of illuminator and a dust of finishing powder.

One of my top skincare purchases has to be the Origins Make A Difference Plus Skin Rejuvenating Treatment, I seriously adore this stuff and it really makes a difference to my skin. It helps to look more even, brighter and just… more plump and hydrated too. I feel like I mention this all the time but it’s definitely an absolute night-time must for me as it helps so much with my complexion. By morning, I feel so much happier with my skin and after a week or so of constant use, I feel like my pores are really minimised, too – this is probably one skincare product I could never live without!

My first step (post-day moisturiser) is the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone *. I wasn’t really a fan of this particular shade until I applied it recently and noticed how flawless it made my skin, it created such a soft-focus look that instantly boosted my skin confidence. I swear by illuminating primers to cover imperfections and just generally even everything out, it’s a big job but it does incredibly well.
For any blemishes that are still peeking through (there’s also one), I’ve actually been applying the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation Compact *, I actually really love this as it’s meant to be allow you to top up your makeup without the dreaded cake! I would rather wear NO makeup than have it look heavy and caked on my skin… bleugh! I tend to use this as a concealer as it’s so light and melts flawlessly in to the blemish, concealing without highlighting it. Full review here.

A quick sweep of blusher never fails to help me look a little alive, I usually opt for something with a bit of shimmer, like theBalm Hot Mama! – these highlighting blushers catch the light and draw attention to my cheeks, ie. away from any spots. This is quite pigmented so a light hand will be enough for a light peachy glow.

And lastly, how could I skip out on my favourite flawless finishing powder, By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder! (Full review here) This is seriously dreamy stuff – I won’t lie to you, it costs an arm and a leg but it’s worth it if you’re willing to hand over the cash. It retains moisture in the skin and completely smoothes over pores, it’s my must-have makeup item and I have made a promise to myself to never be without it. Yep, I’m committed to this stuff. I usually use a nice fluffy powder brush and lightly sweep over the smallest of amounts, makeup is set all day and I’m pleased with how great my skin looks. A voila!

What are your products for skipping out on the foundation? Do you feel confident enough to leave the base alone?

I really want to try the Becca Illuminator, I have heard such good things about the brand. I really like the Barbara Daly Face Lift cream but I think they have changed it now. It’s not expensive at all and I find it makes a massive difference to my skin!

I really want to try the Becca Skin Perfector, it’s been on my wishlist for so long!

  • I’m trying to go for a minimal face and I love the idea of using a skin perfecter as a base and just a few dabs of concealer. My issue is I have quite ruddy, rosacea skin and it makes me panic thinking it wouldn’t last the day. How are you finding this routine for durability?

    • I have quite a pink/red face too and I usually use a yellow or cool toned primer like Moonstone and then with the by terry powder on top it never budges! X

      • That’s fantastic, I’ll have to add these to my list. x

  • I need the origins treatment!

  • Rach

I want to try Origins too, I’ve been saying this for too long but definitely doing it this summer 🙂

  • Even though my skin is AWFUL at the moment (literally gonna be housebound soon, I’m not joking) I only use the bare minimum on my face, light coverage stuff so I don’t feel caked in crap, I hate that feeling. X

  • I’m even more interested in picking up Moonstone. Illuminating primers interest me at the same time scare me. Sure it’s not too oily-looking on the skin?

  • Katie

Wow you’re brave to go foundation free although this post has inspired me to try it this summer.

I bought the ByTerry powder after you mentioning it a few times here and you are right; it is the best finishing powder of any that I’ve tried. I’m totally hooked on the finish it gives! Thanks for clueing me in to it:)

I usually opt for a lightweight tinted moisturizer in the summer months but my ruddy complexion doesn’t enjoy me going completely bare!

I skipped foundation today too! I’ve had pretty bad skin and I think I’ve finally reached the point where I can just go with a bit of concealer (hurrah!). I wanted to ask, do you use the Origins Make a Difference every night or is it more like a treatment for every couple of days?

  • Katarina

I’ve been trying to skip foundation, but lately my skin has been acting up. It’s stressful because even my light foundation feels heavy when I set it. : (

I can’t wait to have skin good enough to be able to do this! I’m currently in my first month of Roaccutane, and after a few months of that and then some scar treatment, I’ll be rocking looks like this all the time!

  • Thyfaine Verthier

    The blush looks so pretty!!

  • Ellis

I really want to try some Becca make up as everyone seems to ramble about it!

It’s so hard to get away with just powder/concealer when you have blotchy, spotty and grey skin like me!

  • Tasha

Recently I’ve found myself just reaching for my clinique CC cream for a base and applying a minimal amount of eyeliner and mascara, little bit of powder and blush, lipstick and I’m good to go. Especially with the warmer weather (although as I type this it looks like it’s raining outside) I don’t want to be putting too much on my face.

For me it’s all or nothing, so if I’m not wearing foundation I’ve just got on lipgloss. I don’t like the way makeup looks on my skin if I don’t have a foundation for it to cling to. My skin just eats all color up, and I look blotchy. However, you should try the Smashbox Halo powder. It’s a great powder for setting or to use as a powder foundation, and it’s got hydrating and skin healthy benefits to it, too! It might be a cheaper alternative for you.
