Beauty Spotlight: Tinted Moisturisers.

If you had suggested a tinted moisturiser to me six months ago, I would have given a nervous chuckle and said “nope, not enough coverage for me!”. Months later, better skincare and the introduction of my bare face to the world via YouTube and I’ll quite happily embrace the sheer look – but only with the right products. As a girl who has suffered acne through her late teens and into her 20’s, I’ve never been one to stray from a good coverage foundation, even though my skin was clearing up and looking healthier. It wasn’t easy for me to make the switch, and I have to admit I do use foundation a few times a week, but for the most part (I’m lazy and sheer products are easier to whack on) I like the more glowing, natural look a tinted moisturiser gives.
I’ve been trialling several sheer bases lately and here are my thoughts.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser SPF20, £33 (Nude)
This is one of the most talked about tinted moisturisers out there, it’s light and dewy and gives your skin a healthy glow whilst also nourishing it. I would say this is quite creamy and thick but is very sheer, it’s ideal for a little coverage on the go. I’d say it’s good for all skin types, possibly those who don’t really tend to dabble too much in base products and want something easy to apply. I prefer to apply this with my fingers, surprisingly. I find the coverage is a little more flattering and it can be worked in more. It covers everything, looks very natural on the skin and is a massive hit with me.

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Tinted Balm, £36 (SB02)
I have a full review on this little wonder right here, it’s a wonderful creamy product that gives a good amount of coverage, covers imperfections and smooths over skin. I like that it’s quite thick as it means I can use a small amount and spend a while buffing it in for a really natural but flawless look. It hydrates and protects the skin throughout the day and has some serious lasting power. It’s one of my favourites for day and night as it gives my skin such a lovely velvety finish without looking like I’m wearing much makeup. A winner for me and ideal for those who like the idea of a tinted moisturiser but don’t want to commit to anything too sheer just yet.

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint, £29 (Porcelain)
It’s likely that you’ve seen my tweets and other updates about this matte tinted base, it’s really beautiful and has been one of my most reached for products as of late. It reminds me of Laura Mercier Silk Creme but a little more matte and an even more natural finish, pretty dreamy right? This lightweight product has a slightly dewy matte finish (yep, a mixture of the two which is why I think the finish looks so natural) and is so easy to buff in to skin for a flawless complexion. This is probably best for those with a combination or oily skin type who don’t like a completely matte look to the skin. It’s got more coverage than your usual tinted moisturiser, too – I’d say it’s not quite a foundation though.

Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, £29 (Opal)
This doesn’t come in your usual foundation shades, but rather their glowing equivalents – I’m Opal for reference. Although I love a dewy finish, I’m not as keen on this as I am on the above, but I do like the subtle glow it gives to my skin whilst also being oil-free. This is very lightweight and I actually used it as a primer when I first received it, although you’re meant to use it alone. It’s great for giving skin that “soft focus” look, blurring imperfections and helping to even out skintone, so it’s probably best for those who don’t tend to go all out with their base.

What are your favourite base products?

Really want to try the Laura Mericer!

  • Sara

I would like to try the Jouer Matte…do you apply it with fingers or with a brush?

  • Katie

    That Jouer tint sounds dreamy!
    Katie xx

  • Beth

    The Kevyn one sounds brilliant!

  • Chrissy

I’ve heard so many good things about the Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, but within the last few weeks I’ve seen loads of bloggers rave about the Kevyn Aucoin base as well. Sadly, I won’t be reaching for either, as I’ve still got tons of BB creams to use up and I’m trying to be good with my money. The bore…

  • Kittymakesup

I love the Laura M TM but another favourite is the Elizabeth Arden TM which I don’t hear many people talking about but its got a lovely texture and good coverage. x

  • Ria

I’m definitely more of a fan of tinted moisturiser in the Summer mainly because of the lighter coverage when the weather’s a bit warmer. Thanks for the recommendations, will have to check out the Laura Mercier one. xoxo

  • Rose

I was dancing around that Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer for ages, I think I’ll give it a try as soon as I can 🙂

  • Charli

I never stray from heavy coverage usually but I am trying to sort my skincare out like you and get into the word of tinted bases!

The jouer one looks great! xxx

  • Michelle

I really want to try the Laura Mercier one, I can’t decide between that or the Nars version 🙂

  • Emer

Really want to try the Laura Mercier one or the Chantecaille tinted moisturiser. Your right everyone raves about it.. My skin is really dry so I need something that will give a dewy finish. Just found your blog and its so unique to all the other beauty blogs out there, loving it! You have a new follower 🙂 xxx

  • Rachel

ah this was a really useful post, i’m exactly the same as you and would never think to try one. maybe i should… x

  • Hannah Cagney & Lace

I’m dying to try the Kevyn Aucoin and the Jouer Matt, they both sound lovely in different ways! I’ve just started using the Dr Jart Water Fuse BB Cream, now I wouldn’t profess love so early but things are looking good.

I still love foundation for more formal events, but for day time I prefer BB creams/tinted moisturizers. In the summer I love Missha 23 BB cream but now that I moved back to the US I need more protection, so my current favorite base products are the By Terry Hyaluronic Face Glow, and then over that, Laura Mercier TM in Bisque.

  • Michelle

I bought the Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser and actually find my skin feels really greasy half way through the day

  • Sarirah

The Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser has been my favourite for 1/2 a year but I recently purchased the jouer matte moisture tint and think it has such a lovely consistency. Perhaps some day I’ll get a chance to try the Kevyn Aucoin one too. :p

  • Whitney

Which one do you think has the most coverage?

    • Kate

Hm either Jouer Matte or Kevyn. Both are really flattering on x

  • India

These look so lovely but do you have any suggestions for cheaper alternatives?

    Lovely post 🙂 xx

    • Kate

      Hey India,
Ah yes, not so much a tinted moisturiser but the Dr Jart Water Fuse BB cream is great. I also always like loreal for makeup and I’d like to try their new CC cream launching soon so maybe hold out for that! Xx

  • Katie

Great post as usual Kate, I’m too scared to go full on tinted moisturiser but you look lovely with less coverage because your skin is great.

    Katie xo

  • LucyLovesToBlog

I love the sound of the Laura Mercier one xx

  • lauren v

I got the Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer (I’m not sure if this is the exact one you blogged about) a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it! It’s great for my normal to dry skin and it really makes you skin look super healthy! I get a lot of compliments on my skin when I have it on. I have to check out the other TMs you mentioned because I’ve beem on a TM-kick lately. Thanks for a very through post! 🙂

  • I love the sound of the matte moisture tint. What brushes do you like to use.

  • Hannah

Why on earth does Nars tinted moisturiser never get any love?! I’ve been loving that stuff for almost 2 years now, it’s SO GOOD!!!

  • I’m stuck on Marcelle’s sheer tint fluid moisturizer! It has the perfect coverage for me, SPF 15, hypoallergenic, great price, buildable color and a little goes a long way. What more could you ask for!?
