Beauty Spotlight: Tinted Moisturisers.
If you had suggested a tinted moisturiser to me six months ago, I would have given a nervous chuckle and said “nope, not enough coverage for me!”. Months later, better skincare and the introduction of my bare face to the world via YouTube and I’ll quite happily embrace the sheer look – but only with the right products. As a girl who has suffered acne through her late teens and into her 20’s, I’ve never been one to stray from a good coverage foundation, even though my skin was clearing up and looking healthier. It wasn’t easy for me to make the switch, and I have to admit I do use foundation a few times a week, but for the most part (I’m lazy and sheer products are easier to whack on) I like the more glowing, natural look a tinted moisturiser gives.
I’ve been trialling several sheer bases lately and here are my thoughts.
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser SPF20, £33 (Nude)
This is one of the most talked about tinted moisturisers out there, it’s light and dewy and gives your skin a healthy glow whilst also nourishing it. I would say this is quite creamy and thick but is very sheer, it’s ideal for a little coverage on the go. I’d say it’s good for all skin types, possibly those who don’t really tend to dabble too much in base products and want something easy to apply. I prefer to apply this with my fingers, surprisingly. I find the coverage is a little more flattering and it can be worked in more. It covers everything, looks very natural on the skin and is a massive hit with me.
Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Tinted Balm, £36 (SB02)
I have a full review on this little wonder right here, it’s a wonderful creamy product that gives a good amount of coverage, covers imperfections and smooths over skin. I like that it’s quite thick as it means I can use a small amount and spend a while buffing it in for a really natural but flawless look. It hydrates and protects the skin throughout the day and has some serious lasting power. It’s one of my favourites for day and night as it gives my skin such a lovely velvety finish without looking like I’m wearing much makeup. A winner for me and ideal for those who like the idea of a tinted moisturiser but don’t want to commit to anything too sheer just yet.
Jouer Matte Moisture Tint, £29 (Porcelain)
It’s likely that you’ve seen my tweets and other updates about this matte tinted base, it’s really beautiful and has been one of my most reached for products as of late. It reminds me of Laura Mercier Silk Creme but a little more matte and an even more natural finish, pretty dreamy right? This lightweight product has a slightly dewy matte finish (yep, a mixture of the two which is why I think the finish looks so natural) and is so easy to buff in to skin for a flawless complexion. This is probably best for those with a combination or oily skin type who don’t like a completely matte look to the skin. It’s got more coverage than your usual tinted moisturiser, too – I’d say it’s not quite a foundation though.
Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, £29 (Opal)
This doesn’t come in your usual foundation shades, but rather their glowing equivalents – I’m Opal for reference. Although I love a dewy finish, I’m not as keen on this as I am on the above, but I do like the subtle glow it gives to my skin whilst also being oil-free. This is very lightweight and I actually used it as a primer when I first received it, although you’re meant to use it alone. It’s great for giving skin that “soft focus” look, blurring imperfections and helping to even out skintone, so it’s probably best for those who don’t tend to go all out with their base.
